Artist & Manufacturer
Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was one of Germany’s most influential industrial designers of the postwar period. A professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, Baumann worked across architecture, product design, lighting, ceramics and tableware, and collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Rosenthal, Braun, and WMF. His work is represented in major design collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum.
Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, became internationally known for its collaborations with avant-garde designers and architects. Through its Studio-Line and design programs, Rosenthal positioned porcelain as a modern design medium, producing iconic works by leading European designers during the mid-20th century.
Design Observations
The two vases embody Baumann’s architectural design language: one features a faceted rectangular body with a cylindrical neck, while the other forms a tall tapering cone with subtly rounded edges. Their monochrome matte porcelain surfaces emphasize pure geometry and proportion, making the pieces appear almost like minimalist architectural columns.
The pairing highlights the dialogue between strict geometric structure and elegant verticality, typical of mid-century German modernist design.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
No visible chips, cracks, or restorations.
Minimal signs of age consistent with vintage porcelain.
What for
A striking sculptural duo suitable for collectors of Rosenthal design or mid-century modern interiors. The tall silhouettes work beautifully on the floor, a console, or a large shelf with a few long stems, branches, or dried grasses, but also function as minimalist sculptural objects in modern, architectural, or gallery-style interiors.
Remarks
Two complementary Rosenthal designs by Hans Theo Baumann from the mid-1960s.
