Product description
Porcelain Vase Trio “1703” – Hans Theo Baumann for Rosenthal, Germany, 1964 Description: Bold porcelain vase trio designed by Hans Theo Baumann for Rosenthal in 1964, featuring striking black geometric micro-patterns on glossy yellow porcelain. The architectural tapering forms and precise graphic decoration reflect Baumann’s modernist design language and Rosenthal’s commitment to experimental design during the 1960s. Object Details Type: Vase trio Model: 1703 Designer: Hans Theo Baumann Manufacturer: Rosenthal Country: Germany Era: 1964 Material: Porcelain Color: Yellow with black graphic pattern Dimensions Tall Vase Height: 46.5 cm Width: 7.5 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Medium Vase Height: 36 cm Width: 6 cm Depth: 6 cm Small Vase Height: 21.5 cm Width: 7 cm Depth: 7 cm Artist & Manufacturer Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was one of the most influential German designers of the post-war period. Trained as an architect and later professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, Baumann developed a multidisciplinary career spanning architecture, industrial design, ceramics, and lighting. His work was produced by major manufacturers including Rosenthal, Braun and WMF, and today forms part of important museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum. Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, became internationally recognized for merging traditional porcelain craftsmanship with avant-garde design collaborations. During the 1950s and 1960s the company worked with leading architects and designers, establishing Rosenthal porcelain as a modern design object rather than purely decorative tableware. Design Observations The three vases form a graduated architectural composition of tall tapering pyramidal silhouettes. Their glossy yellow porcelain surfaces serve as a vivid background for Baumann’s intricate black graphic bands composed of grids, circles, lines and modular symbols. These patterns recall early Op Art and mid-century graphic design, transforming the vessels into vertical graphic compositions while emphasizing rhythm, symmetry and repetition. When displayed together the trio functions almost like a small architectural skyline. Condition Excellent vintage condition. No visible chips, cracks, or restorations. Decoration crisp and well preserved. What for Ideal for collectors of Rosenthal design, Bauhaus-influenced objects or mid-century modern interiors. The trio works beautifully on a console, sideboard or large shelf and can also be placed directly on the floor as sculptural objects; they pair well with minimal arrangements of tall stems, branches or dried grasses. Remarks Complete Rosenthal vase trio from the same model series designed by Hans Theo Baumann in 1964. GENERAL INFORMATION Please explore our profile for more vintage vases and Studio-Line pieces.
