A rare and highly distinctive Swedish Modern bench, model M 103, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and executed by master cabinetmaker Bertil Johansson for AB Ellyset in Markaryd, Sweden, dating from the 1950s–60s.
This beautifully crafted bench is an exceptional example of the more architectural side of Scandinavian Modern design. Constructed entirely in solid pine, it features a remarkably clean and sculptural form, with a long, generously proportioned seat framed by substantial end panels that extend slightly above the seating surface.
The design is particularly distinguished by its exceptional joinery. The end panels incorporate beautifully executed mortise-and-tenon construction with exposed contrasting wooden pegs, creating a striking decorative rhythm while simultaneously revealing the traditional craftsmanship of the piece. The integrated rectangular carrying handles further emphasize the functional yet sculptural character of the design.
The richly figured pine has developed a warm honey-coloured patina over time, highlighting the natural grain and giving the otherwise restrained geometry considerable warmth and character. The combination of bold construction, visible craftsmanship and natural materials makes this an especially appealing example of early Swedish Modern furniture.
The M 103 is a relatively uncommon furniture design by Hans-Agne Jakobsson, who is considerably better known internationally for his iconic lighting designs.
