Hand-painted coffee service by Ernestine Salerno that immediately puts you in a good mood. The American designer hand-painted and signed each piece. Therefore, there is only a very limited number of each piece. Made in Salerno/Italy. The service consists of: 1 coffee pot, 1 sugar bowl with lid, 1 milk jug, 6 coffee mugs/cups, 6 saucers, 6 dessert plates. A total of 21 pieces. The service is in top condition - only 1 plate has a chip and one cup has 2 fine cracks (see pictures), but these are not really visible at first glance. The other parts are flawless. About the designer & production from Wikipedia: Ernestine Cannon ( ), also known as Ernestine Virden-Cannon, was an American ceramicist and designer of dinnerware, whose business Ernestine was based in Italy. Cannon lived in Salerno during World War II, where she founded her business in 1948 in response to the post-war poverty she experienced there. [1] In 1949, the stoneware produced to Cannon's designs was introduced at a Pittsburgh fair by her exclusive representatives, Fisher, Bruce & Co, which brought more attention to her work and led to its sale through department stores such as Neiman Marcus. [1] In 1951, Cannon was awarded a Neiman Marcus Fashion Award because her "creative designs" had "brought new life" to Italy's ceramics industry. [2] Examples of Cannon ceramics are housed at the Dallas Museum of Art.[3] "Ceramiche Ernestine" was a joint partnership between Italian tile manufacturer Mattteo D'Agostino ( ) and American designer Ernestine Virden-Cannon ( ). Ceramiche Ernestine was founded in . Her hand-painted designs and avant-garde shapes emphasized a style we now call Mid-Century Modern &/or Eames Era. The company was quite successful, as the majority of its production was exported to the United States. The designs were fresh and innovative for the time - with a style we now call Mid-Century Modern (MCM). Ernestine Ceramics was appreciated for its designs, but also for its advanced glazes and finishes, which had to be of the highest quality to be accepted by the American market for which the dinnerware was intended. The new glazes and clays were created by the renowned German chemical engineer Horst Simonis, whom Ernestine hired in the early 1950s.
