Product description
Beautiful and rare vintage armchair, designed by Cor Alons and produced by C. den Boer's Meubelfabrieken in Gouda, late 1940s / early 1950s. Alons was an important pioneer within Dutch modernism, but is now less known than many of his contemporaries. Relatively little documentation of his furniture designs has been preserved, meaning that a large part of his oeuvre is still unknown. This armchair comes from Utrecht and has been fully restored, retaining its original character. The curved plywood frame with teak veneer has been carefully refinished, preserving the beautiful patina and subtle signs of wear as much as possible. The seat and backrest have been completely renewed and re-upholstered in a high-quality beige wool fabric from Camira. The subtle color nuances in the fabric, together with the dark teak veneer and the light edges of the plywood, create a beautiful interplay of colors and materials. The design stands out due to its curved plywood construction. The widely flared legs, gracefully curved backrest, and open space between the seat and backrest give the armchair a distinct yet light appearance. The special construction is particularly evident from the side. The visible wood layers emphasize the flowing lines and make the material's structure an important part of the design. The influence of American modernism is hard to miss in this design. Especially the famous LCW Lounge Chair by Charles and Ray Eames from 1946 shows striking similarities. Cees Braakman was also inspired by these innovative American furniture designs at Pastoe a few years later. It is striking that Alons experimented early on with a design language in this armchair that would later be seen, among other things, in Braakman's well-known SB16 chairs. A special piece of early post-war Dutch design, in which technical ingenuity and refined design beautifully come together. The comfortable seat and slightly reclining backrest also make the armchair pleasant to use. A characteristic and relatively unknown design that has been restored to its former glory.
