Artist & Manufacturer
Jan van der Vaart (1931–2000) was one of the most influential Dutch ceramic artists of the twentieth century and a key figure in modern European ceramics. Known for his highly disciplined geometric vessels, van der Vaart developed a distinctive design language based on modular forms, symmetry, and architectural clarity. In addition to his studio practice, he was professor of ceramics at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where he influenced an entire generation of contemporary ceramic artists.
Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, became internationally renowned for combining traditional porcelain craftsmanship with collaborations with leading designers and artists. Through its design programs and Studio-Line collections, Rosenthal transformed ceramics into a medium for avant-garde design during the second half of the twentieth century.
Design Observations
Both vases are constructed from stacked cylindrical modules intersected by vertical concave channels, producing a sculptural interplay of positive and negative space. The surfaces are divided into square panels of contrasting colors, creating a grid-like rhythm that recalls modernist architecture and graphic design.
The forms are functional yet strongly sculptural, embodying van der Vaart’s belief that ceramic vessels should combine precise geometry with spatial clarity.
