Rare decorative cigarette box designed by Piero Fornasetti, Milan, dating from the 1950s. The box consists of a red enamelled metal outer sleeve decorated with a black printed military procession, combined with a removable wooden inner tray in mahogany. The graphic depiction of marching soldiers is characteristic of Fornasetti’s fascination with historical imagery, engravings and archival motifs, translated here into a compact decorative object with a distinctly theatrical presence. The construction is particularly refined: the mahogany drawer slides completely out of the metal case, creating a striking contrast between the warm wood and the vivid red enamel. This example is preserved in very good original vintage condition. The red enamelled surfaces remain notably clean and well preserved, with only minor age-related traces and significantly less scratching and wear than commonly seen on comparable examples. The wooden insert is likewise well preserved overall, although a small piece of wood is missing from one corner on the underside of the drawer. This loss is located on the bottom and does not affect the function, stability or overall visual appearance when the box is displayed or closed. The underside of the metal case is lined with black felt, consistent with period Fornasetti production. A highly collectible example of Fornasetti’s 1950s decorative work, combining graphic imagery, colour and material contrast in a compact and characteristic form.
