This is a 'Made to Measure' cabinet, designed by Cees Braakman for the Dutch manufacturer Pastoe. The furniture is a characteristic example of Dutch Design from the period 1955-1966, known for its modular and functional approach to interior design.
The cabinet is made of wood and finished with a sleek, black lacquer that emphasizes its minimalist silhouette. The 'Made to Measure' system, introduced in the 1950s, allowed customers to assemble their own cabinets from a range of standard elements. This specific configuration consists of a central cabinet section with two doors, flanked by two open shelves resting on metal uprights. Its authenticity is confirmed by the original Pastoe label with 'MADE IN HOLLAND' on the inside.
The furniture is in very good condition, consistent with its age. The clean lines and lack of superfluous decoration are typical of Braakman's designs, which combined functionality and aesthetics. The construction is solid and the finish has largely remained intact, preserving its original character.
With its elongated and low profile, this cabinet is ideal as a Sideboard or TV unit in a modern or mid-century interior. It offers a combination of closed storage space and open display options for books or decorative objects.
