Product description
A striking pair of Armchairs, designed by Miroslav Navrátil for Český Nábytek in former Czechoslovakia, circa 1959. This model, often referred to as the 'TV-fauteuil', was developed in the context of the XII Triennale di Milano (1960). Navrátil received a jury prize at this Triennale for his design, which symbolizes an important period of experimental Czechoslovak furniture design in the post-war years. The design is characterized by a strongly curved fiberglass shell, which seamlessly merges the seat and backrest and has striking, upward-curving sides. The shell rests on a light wooden base with four tapered legs, connected by slender, crossing metal rods. Both chairs have been professionally re-upholstered with a green-blue textured fabric, meticulously following the curved shape of the original shells. The original fiberglass remains visible at the back. It is noteworthy that the two chairs have different original shell colors – one gray, the other yellow – which gives a good insight into the material and construction of the design. The combination of molded fiberglass, traditional wooden legs, and minimalist metal reinforcements reflects Navrátil's experimental approach to chair design in the late 1950s.
