Exquisite pair of Dutch design history: Traditional 'Kwispedoor' spittoons by Royal Tichelaar Makkum. For sale is a fascinating, visually almost identical pair of hexagonal spittoons (Kwispedoor) from the oldest ceramic factory in the Netherlands, Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum. The vessels impress with their elaborate, purely hand-painted polychrome decoration in the noble Imari style (floral motifs in cobalt blue, rust red, and golden yellow) as well as the typically widely flared, wavy rim. The special feature of this set (Two Eras): Although they visually harmonize perfectly as a symmetrical pair, the two pieces come from different eras of the manufacturer's history, making them a great collector's ensemble: Object 1 (Antique – circa 1900): Rarity with the rare, handwritten brown brush signature including model number 656 (an old, original price tag in Dutch guilders is also on the underside). Object 2 (Vintage – circa 1940-1960): Marked with the classic blue Tichelaar coat of arms mark (model vb 15-2). This piece bears the personal signature of the renowned Makkum master painter Jetse Visser (monogram JB) and the second painter (HH). A wonderful ensemble for collectors of fine faience art and an extravagant eye-catcher for modern, eclectic interiors – for example, perfectly usable as extraordinary mini vases for short flower arrangements.
