In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin eighteen times in the Grotto of Massabielle, in Lourdes. Within a few years, French manufacturers produced thousands of statuettes to meet the demand from pilgrims and Catholic households. This one is among the most beautiful of this production. Molded in pure white biscuit porcelain, with a fine and homogeneous matte surface, and thin, lightweight walls. The Virgin is depicted standing, hands clasped over her chest, a veil on her head, her gaze lowered in contemplation. The drapery is fluid and academic, the folds of the mantle falling naturally and precisely. The round base, decorated with embossed clouds and rocks, is a direct reference to the rock of Massabielle where the Virgin appeared. The modeling is of a higher quality than common productions of the era. On the underside, an incised molded mark in the paste, partially legible, with model number "20" and manufacturer's initials; attribution to be confirmed by expert appraisal. An old crack runs through the mark, in the fired paste, without affecting the stability of the piece. Height 20 cm. France, circa . Very good general condition. Placed on a mantelpiece, a shelf, or in an oratory, it brings a gentle and contemplative presence.
