Nomen aka Nuno Reis (1974 - 2022..deceased) was a Graffiti / Street Art pioneer from Portugal, painting since 1989.
He is an artist of high recognition and merit, in the Portuguese panorama of the visual arts he is one of the oldest and prestigious artists of street art in Portugal.
Nomen's art was chosen and highlighted as essential to the beginning of street art in Portugal in the late 1980s in the book “Tráfego, Antologia Crítica da Nova Visualidade Portuguesa” - “Traffic, Critical Anthology of the New Portuguese Visuality”, published in 2001 by Porto 2001-European Capital of Culture.
Today, he is considered an international mural artist of immense talent and extraordinary versatility, who can multiply in themes ranging from his dancing graffiti letters, to captivating expressive and colorful female faces, to pop and 3D themes.
In 2010, the book “3D Street Art”, from Tectum Publishers, Belgium highlighted his work with 6 special pages. This book introduces you to some of the most remarkable 25 artists from the past, present and future of 3D street art in the world, along with artists such as Roa, Blue Sky, Dan Witz, Edgar Mueller, Daim…
A versatile and prolific artist from a young age, Nomen began to spread his art and mastery of graffiti outside of Portugal, putting his name in graffiti letters, on walls and trains since the early 90's, in Spain, France , Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and the rest of Europe.
Later, from the year 2000, he wanted to complement his work in the most illustrative field and started painting female faces, initially based on photorealism, but over the years this process has gone through more carefree and expressionistic techniques based on the deformation of the elements.
Between 2011 and 2014, he paused from his favorite subjects and themes of murals to allow himself to be tainted and enthused by the politico-social graffiti, which he used as a form of struggle and protest during the Troika era and the social crisis and political instability. that hit Portugal.
His famous intervention murals "Merckel's Puppets" and "Pray For Portugal" were published and seen in newspapers around the world (New York Times, The Guardian of el País), illustrating the crisis in Europe that was going on during that period.
From 2014 until his death in 2022, he specialized in large-scale visual murals such as buildings and large infrastructures.
