About This Design
The Moroso Volant is a design by Patricia Urquiola from 2007 for the Italian brand Moroso. With this collection, Urquiola explored the “skin” of a piece of furniture. She compared the loose upholstery to a Balenciaga gown or the robe of a shogun. The fabric lies like a loosely draped cloth over the frame and falls in waves down the front and sides. The chromed base appears rectangular, but is actually trapezoidal and follows the line of the seat and back. This creates an exciting contrast between clean lines and soft, free forms. The Moroso Volant is therefore both a sofa and a sculptural object.
Underneath the upholstery is polyurethane foam on a steel inner frame. The seat is deep, and the backrest and armrests flow into each other in one continuous line. You sit relaxed and well-supported. The cover is removable, which makes maintenance and potential re-upholstery easier. This version has partial upholstery, so that the slender chrome frame remains visible and the sofa appears light.
