This serene figure study, titled “Seated nude in thought”, shows an understated composition by the highly esteemed Belgian painter Jozef Hoemaeker (1911–1980). The power of this canvas lies in the tonal, minimalist structure of soft skin tones and deep shadows, broken by an expressive, bright blue brushstroke in the foreground. Hoemaeker was taught by the legendary master Isidore Opsomer at the Academie van Antwerpen and his work is found in various museum collections. On the back of the stretcher is the original, purple oval studio stamp: “ATELIER Hoemaeker”, which proves that the canvas remained in his personal possession until his death. Also provided with inventory number “R-189”. The painting is in excellent historical condition and is set in its original gold-grey patinated wooden frame, 5 cm thick. An exclusive eye-catcher that blends perfectly into a Japandi, Wabi-Sabi or modern design interior.
