Charming mid-century side table, most likely produced in Fiji or the wider South Pacific region during the 1950s–1960s. The table is made from a substantial live-edge slab of solid tropical hardwood, most likely monkey pod / rain tree wood, retaining its original natural bark edge. The tabletop is decorated with a hand-painted map of the Fiji Islands, including Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Kadavu, the Yasawa Islands, Lau Group and Taveuni, together with the 180° meridian. The natural growth rings of the wood form a striking backdrop to the cartographic decoration, creating an unusual dialogue between landscape, material and geography. The table stands on three elegant tapered wooden legs, typical of mid-century design. The legs are removable for transport and are mounted to the underside with original metal fittings. Such live-edge tables were produced in the Pacific region during the post-war period as decorative furniture for local interiors and the growing international travel and export market. The table remains in good original vintage condition, with age-related traces of use, minor wear to the bark edge and patination to the metal fittings on the underside. The painted map remains clearly legible and visually strong.
