Lovely Matsushima Naohide Kokeshi. This specific kokeshi comes from the famous Nibahiya Bussanten workshop, located on the coastal road in Matsushima. This is the only specialized kokeshi workshop in that region and is known as the official maker of the "Matsushima Naohide Kokeshi". The style and the workshop were established more than 70 years ago (in 1949) by the craftsman Naojiro Motomura. He created these dolls specifically to give Matsushima its own unique form of traditional folk art. In this specific workshop, the dolls are turned, sanded, and painted by hand from start to finish using local wood from Miyagi Prefecture. The black painting on the body that you see represents the pine islands of the bay, the trademark of the Naohide style. Matsushima, located in Miyagi Prefecture, is known as one of the three most beautiful landscapes in Japan. If you look closely at the doll's torso, you will see that the black paintwork is not an abstract pattern, but a hand-drawn, minimalist landscape of Matsushima Bay, including the iconic pine trees on the islets and the contours of the coast. The height is 11 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or small tears/dents present to a greater or lesser extent.
