Product description
A compact, brutalist liquor cabinet, designed by Jean Batenburg for MI (Belgium) in the 1960s. The cabinet is made of solid oak with a dark, ebonized finish and is characterized by the strong geometric forms typical of Batenburg's designs for MI. The two front doors consist of deeply faceted oak panels in a repeating diamond pattern; this gives the otherwise sleek, rectangular cabinet a striking three-dimensional surface. Due to the changing angles of the relief, the light falls differently on the front each time, accentuating both the geometry and the wood grain of the oak. Behind the dark exterior hides a contrasting, light-colored interior. The upper section features integrated lighting that illuminates the interior when in use, while a glass shelf provides space for bottles, glassware, or serving items. Below the shelf are two pull-out drawers, providing hidden storage in this compact cabinet. The robust exterior construction forms a deliberate contrast with the lighter, more functional interior. The cabinet stands on simple, rectangular legs and retains the understated proportions and architectural character of the larger furniture pieces from the same series by Batenburg and MI. The keys are present. D x H x W: 53 x 80 x 100 cm Good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The ebonized finish shows areas where the color has worn off, scratches, minor damage, and wear – particularly on the top, edges, corners, and around the doors – revealing the warmer tones of the underlying oak.
