Product description
At the end of the Meiji era, Japan opened up to the world without abandoning any of the poetry of its landscapes. Its porcelains then traveled to Europe, carrying with them these images that so fascinated the West: mountains shrouded in mist, pavilions hidden among trees, pines, birds, and the unchanging silhouette of Mount Fuji. This antique set, comprising a covered teapot, a milk jug, a cup, and its saucer, belongs to this particularly fertile period of Japanese decorative arts. On the ivory-white porcelain, the blue behaves almost like ink. Deep when it depicts a tree or highlights architecture, it gradually becomes paler to suggest water, distance, and the mist that seems to envelop the mountains. The design is not simply repeated; it travels from one piece to another. The teapot's generous belly offers the most expansive panorama. The landscape unfolds around architecture and vegetation before fading towards distant reliefs. Even its lid participates in the scene, enlivened by small blue birds. Inside, the perforated strainer that once held tea leaves remains. The milk jug offers another, more intimate perspective, while the cup holds a particularly charming detail: a few birds cross the rim and alight inside it. On the saucer, the landscape closes in a circle and almost takes on the appearance of a small print. In the distance, Mount Fuji reappears, never theatrical, simply present on the horizon, as it has been for centuries in the Japanese imagination. Beneath the pieces appears the mark 大日本, Dai Nippon, "Great Japan." This mark, associated with the forms and character of the porcelain, allows the set to be placed at the end of the Meiji period, around . A few nuances and discreet traces of time naturally remind us of their age, visible in the photographs. Sold as a 4-piece set. Teapot: approximately 13 cm high with lid. Milk jug: approximately 10 cm. Saucer: approximately 12 cm in diameter.
