Jan Toorop (1858–1928) – The Sacrifice (1927)
These 3 works are well-known, high-quality multi-color Lithographs & prints by the prominent Dutch artist Jan Toorop. They are part of his later oeuvre, in which he focused on religious art after his conversion to Catholicism. The depictions are executed in his typical, strict, linear, and serene symbolist style.
Depiction and Composition:
The work is an elongated composition built from various fragments and scene groups revolving around the central theme "The Sacrifice".
Religious Figures: The Lithographs & prints depict, among others, Maria with the child, devout praying and veiled women (nuns), Cardinal Manning, and religious leaders. In the central panel, figures such as a strikingly drawn priest (based on the 'Paterke van Hasselt') bless a kneeling person.
Family: Toorop often incorporated people from his immediate surroundings into his work. For example, three singing girls are depicted (also referred to as Jeunes Filles Chantant or Children Singing), including his beloved granddaughter Annetje (Annie Fernhout, daughter of artist Charley Toorop).
Historical Context (Mussolini): On the left side/behind the praying figures, the face of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini is incorporated. In the mid-1920s, the deeply Catholic Toorop (together with intellectuals such as his friend, the priest Wouter Lutkie) had a strong fascination with Mussolini. He saw in him a mystical figure who could restore order and faith.

Condition of the Frames: 1 frame shows damage on the left side and all three have some signs of wear due to age.
