Jan Toorop (1858–1928),
A famous Dutch artist known for his symbolist style. Title: "Het Offer" (The Sacrifice), created in 1927. This is one of his last major graphic works. Depiction: From left to right you see Mary with the child, praying women, Cardinal Manning, Benito Mussolini and family members of Toorop, such as his granddaughter. As in many of Toorop's works, this print features religious figures such as devoutly praying veiled women and a priest showing a small chapel.
It is curious, however, that Benito Mussolini is depicted to the right of this. In historiography, Mussolini is currently written on a dark page, but in the mid-1920s his star was rising and the Italian Duce was also popular among European intellectuals and artists. Jan Toorop was quite outspoken in his adoration for Mussolini. He saw Mussolini primarily as a prophet and mystic, as a preacher of an 'unyielding faith, in whose figure the work of Our Lord became visible'. Not only did Mussolini feature in some lithographs, Toorop also made several portraits of him.
At his request, the Brabant priest and fascist Wouter Lutkie took two portraits to Rome in July 1927 to offer them to the Duce. With the portraits under his arm, he went to an audience on July 18th. Mussolini was delighted with them, and gave Lutkie a signed photo back for Toorop, with the inscription 'Al pittore Toorop, con grande ammirazione.'
