Jan Toorop 1858-1928
This elongated religious artwork is a well-known multi-colored lithograph by the prominent Dutch artist Jan Toorop (1858–1928), titled "Het Offer" (also known as "The Sacrifice" or "Het Heilig Paterke") from the year 1927. This work dates from Toorop's later period, in which, after his conversion to Catholicism, he fully focused on religious art in a characteristic, linear and serene style.
The work is composed of various juxtaposed fragments and scenes. It depicts devout, praying figures, veiled women (nuns) and religious leaders shown in deep devotion and contemplation.
The Central Motif:
In the central panel, you see a strikingly drawn priest (based on the 'Paterke van Hasselt' or similar religious figures from Toorop's circle) raising his hand in blessing over a kneeling, praying person.
Mussolini And Historical Context: A special historical detail of this print is that Toorop incorporated the face of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on the left side (behind the praying figures).
In the mid-1920s, the deeply Catholic Toorop (like some of the Catholic intellectuals of the time, including his friend the priest Wouter Lutkie) had a strong fascination with Mussolini. He then saw him as a mystical figure who could restore order and faith in Italy.
Family: To the right in the work, among the praying people, Toorop also depicted three singing girls, including his beloved granddaughter Annetje (Annie Fernhout). Style Characteristics: The work is executed in Toorop's typical, late graphic style.
