Jan Toorop 1858-1928. This selected artwork is a well-known religious work titled The Sacrifice (1927) by the famous Dutch artist Jan Toorop (1858–1928). This specific fragment shows three praying or singing girls (also referred to as 'Jeunes filles chantant' or 'Children singing'). It is a beautiful example of Toorop's late, strict, and linear Symbolist style. Background and Details of the Artwork: * The depicted persons: Jan Toorop often chose figures from his immediate surroundings for his religious works. The girl in the middle is Toorop's beloved granddaughter, Annetje (the daughter of artist Charley Toorop). * The composition: Originally, these three figures are part of a much broader, elongated composition featuring various figures and groups of believers, all centered around "the sacrifice" as a central theme. On the right in the background, a glimpse of a statue or religious architecture can still be caught. * Technique: The original work was executed in pencil, colored pencil, and chalk on paper. Due to the popularity of the work, high-quality lithographs and copperplate engravings were distributed at the time through publishers (such as Vorst & Co or S. Morst Amsterdam).
