The Italian lounge chair from the 1970s represents the Space Age movement in its most expressive form. Its soft, organic silhouette creates the impression of an object inviting relaxation by its very presence — without sharp edges, without rigid lines, without compromises between aesthetics and comfort.
The construction is based on a monolithic form in which the backrest flows seamlessly into the seat, creating an uninterrupted shape reminiscent of a shell or a wave. The finely woven upholstery fabric envelops the entire piece evenly, giving the chair a visual softness that corresponds to its actual comfort. The plastic base remains almost invisible, allowing the form to appear as if it floats above the floor. This solution is typical of Italian design of the decade — furniture was meant to look light even when offering deep, enveloping seating.
The 1970s in Italy marked the peak of experimentation in lounge‑chair design. Designers moved away from traditional frame‑and‑spring construction, seeking new ways to build comfort.
