A bold and luminous duo of “Kalabasse” vases designed by Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg for Kristallglaswerke Hirschberg, these pieces stand among the most sculpturally refined expressions of mid-century German glass design. Produced prior to 1958, they embody a moment in which industrial glassmaking achieved a rare synthesis of clarity, color, and form.
The silhouette—named “Kalabasse” after the gourd-like form—is both organic and controlled: a full, rounded body rising into a sharply defined cylindrical neck. This contrast between volume and restraint creates a visual tension that is heightened by the intensity of the ruby red glass. The color is deep and saturated, yet highly translucent, allowing light to pass through and animate the interior volume with a glowing, almost liquid presence.
Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg, a pivotal figure in German postwar design, was known for his rigorous yet sensuous approach to form. Trained as a graphic designer and later active across product and industrial design, he brought a distinctly modern clarity to his objects—reducing forms to their essential geometry while preserving a tactile, almost anthropomorphic quality.
