Product description
Large Japanese Imari display vase – 38 cm (40 cm with stand) – gilded work, phoenix & peonies
An imposing and richly decorated piece of Japanese porcelain in the classic Imari/Arita style. With its deep dark ground, abundant gilded work and coral red ears, this is an absolute eye-catcher — a showpiece that immediately attracts attention in any classic or eclectic interior.
The Shape
The vase has a lobed, serrated (foliate) rim with a white glazed interior and a warm iron oxide/brown rim finish. On the neck two striking coral red stylized ears (lug handles) — a rarer and more sought-after detail. The vase optionally stands on a matching wooden stand.
The Decor
Classic Imari palette: iron red, cobalt blue, orange, gold and black.
Deep dark blue-black ground with exuberant gilded (gold) karakusa scrollwork and stylized clouds
Iron-red ground* with white stylized *chrysanthemums**
Central white cartouches with peonies and a phoenix (ho-ō) bird motif
Ruyi clouds, leaf tendrils and fine line work accents in enamel
Everything is hand-painted — no decal or transfer. You can see the brushwork, the variation in gold thickness and the freehand of the decorator. Exactly what gives an Imari piece character.
Dimensions
Height: approx. 38 cm without wooden stand
Height: approx. 40 cm with wooden stand
Sturdy, bulbous belly with a tapered foot — a truly monumental size
Dating (Honest)
No mark or provenance present. Based on style, palette, glaze and finish, I cautiously date this piece to late Meiji ca. 1880–1912
Condition
Good condition for its age. The glaze shows the normal, honest signs of use of an older piece (fine craquelure in the glaze, slight wear to the gold in the most touched areas, some dust/residue in the shallow parts — see photos). No major breaks or restorations seen.
Ideal For
Collectors of Japanese Imari/Arita porcelain
Lovers of classic interiors with a rich, warm appearance
A statement piece on a dresser, mantelpiece, console or in a display cabinet
Collection possible, shipping in consultation. Will be carefully and double-packed for shipping (or collection), given size and weight.
