Geometric Brutalism in Cut Glass – East German Studio Vase, c. 1970s
A striking example of mid-century modern glasswork from East Germany, this heavy and highly architectural vase stands as a sculptural object in its own right. Cast in dense, dark olive-green glass verging on smoky black, its sharply faceted body features a rhythmic sequence of circular lenses—deeply cut into its hourglass silhouette with surgical precision.
The octagonal base and mouth lend the piece a distinctly engineered character, blending industrial clarity with artisanal depth. The surface treatment—alternating smooth convexity with crisp cut-ins—creates a kinetic interplay of light and shadow, form and void. Though unsigned, the vase is clearly the work of a skilled studio artisan, likely working within a VEB glass manufactory (Volkseigener Betrieb, GDR), and possibly inspired by contemporaries at Exbor, Skrdlovice or Ilmenau.
Its imposing heft and cool formalism situate it somewhere between utilitarian vessel and table-top totem. A quintessential collectible for those drawn to Brutalist aesthetics, op art geometry, or the austere elegance of Cold War-era applied arts.
