Product description
Charming and finely observed French School pencil drawing depicting a small coastal village and fishing scene, dated June 13, 1840. Executed in graphite on paper, the composition shows a group of traditional buildings gathered around a small inlet or harbor. Fishing boats rest along the shore while nets, ropes and other fishing equipment occupy the foreground. Several figures animate the center of the scene, giving this intimate view a particularly evocative sense of everyday life in rural coastal France during the first half of the 19th century. The architectural details, boats and carefully rendered textures give the drawing both documentary charm and a strong Romantic-period atmosphere. An inscription in pencil beneath the image is clearly dated “13 Juin 1840” (“13 June 1840”). Additional handwritten characters or initials follow the date but have not been conclusively identified. Presented under glass in a later simple black frame with a wide light-colored mat. The paper shows visible age-related toning, foxing and scattered spotting, particularly in the lighter areas of the composition, consistent with a work dating from 1840. The drawing itself remains clearly legible and retains attractive detail and contrast. The frame shows light signs of use.
