Elegant French Napoleon III portico mantel clock dating from the mid-19th century, circa 1855–1870, combining an architectural Empire Revival design with the dramatic contrast of ebonized wood and richly detailed gilt-metal mounts.
The clock is constructed in the form of a classical architectural portico, with four cylindrical blackened-wood columns resting on gilt bases and surmounted by finely decorated gilt capitals.
The stepped rectangular base and upper entablature are embellished with beautifully detailed applied floral ornaments, their warm gilded finish standing out dramatically against the deep black surface of the case.
At the center is an attractive silvered dial with a finely engraved radiating decoration, surrounded by an elaborate gilt foliate bezel. The original Roman numeral hour markers show significant age-related wear and fading, with several numerals now partially erased or difficult to read. This visible wear forms part of the clock’s authentic antique character and is clearly shown in the photographs.
Below the dial hangs a particularly decorative pendulum incorporating a lyre-form suspension and a large circular gilt ornament richly worked with scrolling foliage and floral motifs.
The mechanical movement has two winding arbors and incorporates a bell-striking mechanism. The rear of the brass movement is visible and does not appear to bear an identifiable maker’s mark.
The clock retains its winding key and pendulum.
The movement starts and appears to run; however, it has not been professionally serviced or tested for long-term accuracy. Given its age, a professional mechanical service and adjustment is recommended before regular use. As with all antique mechanical clocks, adjustment may also be necessary following transportation.
The ebonized wooden case shows authentic age-related wear, including small scratches, rubbing, minor losses to the black finish and wear along the edges and moldings. The silvered dial shows pronounced patina, surface wear and substantial fading and loss to the painted Roman numerals. The gilt elements retain an attractive warm finish with age-related patina.
These traces are consistent with a French clock approximately 160 years old and have been intentionally retained as part of its antique character. Please refer carefully to the detailed photographs, particularly those showing the dial and its worn numerals, as they form an integral part of the condition description.
A highly decorative example of French Second Empire design, combining the architectural vocabulary of the Empire style with the rich ornamental taste characteristic of the Napoleon III period.
