Product description
Taraxacum is the Latin name for the dandelion, and this lamp is Achille Castiglioni's interpretation of its seed head. In 1960, Achille and his brother Pier Giacomo designed the first Taraxacum for Flos, a soft, diffused pendant made with their "Cocoon" resin sprayed over a steel frame. Almost thirty years later, Achille revisited the idea and turned it inside out: instead of hiding the light source, he made the bulbs the design itself. The result, Taraxacum 88, was conceived for grand spaces and special occasions, where a lamp should also be a sculpture. Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002) is one of the most influential figures of Italian design. He won the Compasso d'Oro, Italy's highest design award, several times, his work is held in major museum collections including MoMA in New York, and pieces such as Arco, Toio and Parentesi are still in production today. The Light The structure is an icosahedron made of 20 pressed and polished aluminium equilateral triangles, each fitted with three sockets, for a total of 60 globe bulbs. The lamp works with two layers of light: direct light from the bulbs, and reflected light bouncing off the mirror-polished aluminium facets. The facets multiply every point of light into dozens of reflections, creating a sparkling, almost jewel-like effect. Switched off, it reads as a striking chrome sculpture; switched on, it fills a room with a warm, generous glow.
