The “Fifty Fifty” lamp, designed by Swiss artist Paul Talman in 1965, is an exceptional light object with a striking interactive design. Originally conceived as a kinetic artwork, it was later produced by Interaktives Licht Köln in the 1990s. The lamp features a sleek anodized aluminum base and nine rotating plastic spheres, each with “on” printed on the white side and “off” on the black—some positioned upside down. These swiveling spheres allow for playful customization, revealing or concealing light to create unique patterns.
Versatile in use, it functions as a table lamp, floor lamp, or wall-mounted sconce, with pre-drilled mounting holes for easy installation. Operated via an in-line switch on the cable, it is in superb vintage condition with only minor wear. Paul Talman, trained as a lithographer in Bern, gained international recognition for his abstract kinetic works and patented designs while collaborating with Knoll in the U.S. This rare piece remains a stunning fusion of art and function.
