Product description
A rare and highly sought-after Dutch colonial chest, manufactured in Batavia (present-day Jakarta, Indonesia) in the early 18th century. Expertly crafted from solid Amboyna wood, one of the most prized exotic hardwoods of the Dutch East Indies, the chest displays a beautiful natural grain and a rich, warm patina that has developed over more than three centuries.
The chest features the original white metal fittings, including the corner fittings, carrying handles, and lock plate, all of which display an attractive, aged patina. The interior still retains the original red lacquer finish, which forms a striking contrast with the richly patterned Amboyna wood.
The lock and key are later replacements, fitted during the chest's long history. Such historical replacements are common in antique chests that have remained in regular use and do not detract from the decorative or historical value of the piece. The chest is in good antique condition with signs of age, use, and patina consistent with an age of over 300 years.
