This lounge swivel chair, model EA-110, is a design icon, the result of a long development phase and part of a small series of the first generation of the ALU-GROUP, built before HERMAN MILLER began industrial mass production in the US.
The chair has been reupholstered!
NOTE: The last two photos show, among other things, screenshots of Charles and Ray Eames working on and developing the Aluminum Group chairs, elements from various development studies currently on display at the EAMES INSTITUTE in California, and an illustration of the model from an early Herman Miller brochure.
Design features:
Sand-cast aluminum
- Exceptionally solid aluminum base frame (PEDESTAL) with two solid brass pivot bearings
Of course, this model does not have the front aluminum stretcher bar, as the aluminum bar of the base frame engages the groove of the side elements, thus providing the necessary tension. This also corresponds to the original design concept of Charles and Ray Eames. Today, for economic reasons, the base frame bar is simply screwed underneath, requiring an additional stretcher bar.
Please note the particularly beautiful and sweeping shape of the base frame. It also bears no manufacturer's embossing with a patent or serial number!
The "PATENT PENDING" embossing, which can be found on early models – before the patent was granted – is also missing here!
We were able to engage an experienced upholsterer/seamstress and EAMES expert to create the sand-colored new cover, and she did an outstanding job!

Used furniture – The swivel chair is in very good condition and has been reupholstered! The aluminum parts have been carefully and discreetly restored!

The US furniture manufacturer HERMAN MILLER has its roots in the early 20th century. With Ray and Charles Eames, the company succeeded in attracting the most important designers of the modern era.
In 1950, VITRA Deutschland GmbH was founded in Weil am Rhein, Europe. This marked the beginning of VITRA seating production with authorized manufacturing and licensed distribution of Herman Miller products for the European market.
