Exceptionally rare and almost fully documented dining room by the renowned Belgian Ateliers d’Art De Coene Frères, Courtrai, executed in 1927 in oak and characteristic Zebrano.
The ensemble comes as a coherent set from a historical commission and possesses exceptionally extensive documentation for furniture of this era. Particularly noteworthy is the preserved original invoice from De Coene Frères dated November 25, 1927. In it, the furnishing is explicitly referred to as
„Salle à manger B.L.M. Zebrano“
.
The invoice lists the individual components of the dining room furnishing: a sideboard/argentier cabinet, a dresser with a marble top, a rectangular table, six chairs, as well as a mirror and framing.
Furthermore, the large argentier is depicted in a historical De Coene catalog and referred to there as
„ARGENTIER – Type B.L.M. 2 – Chêne et Zébrano“
. The historical illustration allows for a direct comparison with the preserved furniture and underlines the exceptionally clear provenance and authenticity of this ensemble.
Exceptional Original Condition
Of particular importance is the high degree of preserved original substance. The furniture has not been fundamentally restored or modernized, but professionally cleaned, conserved, and carefully refurbished. The explicit goal was to preserve the historical appearance and the original surfaces.
Preserved are, among other things, the historical surfaces, the original fittings and decorative metal parts, as well as essential constructive and design details of the original execution.
Particularly remarkable is the existing original De Coene key, whose brass ring is clearly marked with
„DE COENE FRÈRES – COURTRAI“
. The manufacturer's marking on the furniture itself is also present.
The four chairs belong to the historical furnishing of the ensemble. Their wood substance and surfaces have been preserved; the seat cushions have been professionally re-upholstered and covered for continued use.
Design and Materials
The ensemble exemplifies the sophisticated furniture production of De Coene Frères in the late 1920s. The combination of warm oak and the strongly linear, exotic-looking Zebrano veneer characterizes the entire dining room.
In addition, there are dark contrasting carved and turned elements, high-quality metal fittings, and deliberately placed decorative details.
Particularly characteristic are the curved plinth lines of the cabinet furniture, the decoratively framed glass doors of the argentier, and the expressive fittings. The smaller dresser has an original marble top and an exceptional mirror attachment with highly stylized, geometrically curved elements.
The large table is designed as an extendable table. Its tabletop features an elaborately structured veneer design with geometric fields and, together with the four chairs, forms the center of the ensemble.
A Rare Complete Ensemble
Complete dining room furnishings by De Coene Frères from this period are extremely rare today. Often, only individual cabinets, tables, or chairs have survived.
Here, however, there is a coherent furnishing whose period of creation, manufacturer, model group, and original scope of delivery can be directly proven by the preserved historical invoice and contemporary catalog material.
According to the assessment of a recognized specialist for De Coene Frères, it is possibly one of the extremely rare, still coherently preserved ensembles of this type. Absolute uniqueness cannot be conclusively proven scientifically; however, the combination of completeness, original condition, and documentation is exceptional.
The ensemble thus represents not merely a high-quality historical dining room furnishing, but a documented testimony to Belgian furniture and design history of the late 1920s.
