Product description
Beautiful vintage sideboard model 'DB32', designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. The sideboard is part of Pastoe's well-known Birch Series and is a further development of the DB02. A characteristic piece of Dutch design where simplicity, functionality, and innovative production techniques come together.
the sideboard has been fully restored. Both the birch wood and the teak doors have been carefully treated and refinished. This has brought out the original color contrast between the two wood types, exactly as Braakman intended. Especially striking is the beautiful, lively grain of the teak, with warm color nuances that contrast beautifully with the light birch wood. Technically, the sideboard is also in excellent condition again.
Behind the double accordion doors, there is a surprisingly spacious and practical interior, with various shelves and four small drawers. These are executed according to Braakman's characteristic dust-free construction, with rounded corners made of bent plywood. A clever and well-thought-out layout that shows that at Pastoe, not only design but also user-friendliness was central.
Characteristic of the Birch Series is the combination of a sober, functional design with innovative constructions and subtle details. The now iconic loop legs of bent plywood are perhaps the best example of this. They literally lift the rather closed, rectangular cabinet off the ground and give the furniture a much lighter and more playful appearance. It is precisely this contrast between the sleek cabinet and the gracefully curved legs that makes the design so special.
The Birch Series beautifully reflects the innovative spirit of Dutch furniture design in the post-war years: sober, practical, yet optimistic and progressive. More than seventy years later, the design has lost none of its character. A special piece of Dutch design, ready for years of use after a thorough restoration.
