P. Chalon – Monumental Modernist Painting – 1958 – 120 × 100 Cm
Impressive and exceptionally large original painting, signed “P. Chalon” and dated 1-11-58.
A powerful figurative and modernist composition from 1958, built from various scenes with human figures. The work combines bright color fields, dark contours, and more subdued passages into one monumental whole.
The depiction contains numerous characters and highly stylized figures, distributed over geometric planes. Especially the contrast between the bright red, yellow, blue, and green hues and the dark, almost mysterious group of figures in the upper right gives the work enormous visual power.
Dating: November 1, 1958, immediately following the period of Expo 58 in Brussels. The composition and formal language clearly fit within the post-war modernism of the 1950s. A direct link to Expo 58 is not documented.
