The Maralunga lounge chair by Cassina, designed in 1973 by Vico Magistretti, is one of the most significant classics of Italian furniture design. With its generous padding, softly rounded contours and characteristic adjustable backrest, it combines exceptional seating comfort with a distinctive design language. The chair is in excellent vintage condition. The black leather is wonderfully soft and supple and shows only a minimal patina, which underscores its authenticity. The cushions are pleasantly soft and comfortable. The characteristic mechanism of the backrest also works perfectly and can be adjusted with ease.
The special feature of the Maralunga is its innovative backrest with an integrated folding mechanism. By simply tilting the upper back cushion, the backrest can be changed from a high, supportive position to a lower, relaxed form. This refined construction allows for different seating positions and gives the chair two distinct silhouettes. The wide, fully padded armrests and the generous seat cushion complete the exceptionally comfortable design.
The Maralunga was designed in 1973 by Vico Magistretti (1920–2006), one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. Magistretti knew how to combine functional innovation with a clear yet sensual design like almost no one else. For the Maralunga, he received the renowned Italian design award Compasso d’Oro in 1979. The model is still considered one of his most important works and a milestone in Italian upholstered furniture design.
Cassina, founded in 1927 by the brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy, is one of the internationally most significant manufacturers of high-quality designer furniture. The company shaped the development of modern Italian furniture design in particular since the 1950s and worked with leading designers such as Gio Ponti, Le Corbusier, Mario Bellini and Vico Magistretti.
