Product description
Vintage slat bench model 'BZ71', designed by Martin Visser in 1960 and produced by 't Spectrum. Visser originally designed the slat bench for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The design was so well received that 't Spectrum added it to its collection in various versions in 1965.
This piece comes from its first owners in Belgium and is made of solid wenge wood. In our workshop, the slat bench has been carefully cleaned and refinished. We deliberately chose to preserve the characteristic patina as much as possible. The light signs of wear and color differences that have developed over more than sixty years give the dark wenge wood a special, lived-in character and emphasize the authenticity of the furniture.
The design is a striking example of Visser's sober, functionalist aesthetic. The parallel wooden slats, together with the open base, form a clear, almost architectural construction. Characteristic are the visible finger joints, which not only ensure a sturdy connection but also form an important part of the design. The rhythm of the slats and the open spaces between them give the bench a remarkably airy character, despite the use of dark, solid wood.
The BZ71 is a versatile piece of furniture that can be used as a seating bench, coffee table, or low cabinet. A characteristic piece of Dutch design where simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship come together. It is precisely the combination of Visser's understated design and the beautifully developed patina that makes this piece special.
