Designing a lamp that captures the magic of blowing a glass bubble had long been on Christien's wish list. Or as she puts it herself: "I wanted to design a lamp in which that first magical moment is preserved: the moment when the air from the glassblower's lungs forms a glass bubble on the blowpipe."
To capture this magic, Christien developed a lamp consisting exclusively of the parts needed to blow the glass: a blowpipe, a wooden mold, and glass. The lamp's appearance is the result of these three elements.
Together with master glassblower Gert Bullée of the National Glass Museum Leerdam, a bubble is blown on a copper blowpipe. Copper and glass shrink to the same extent, ensuring the glass remains firmly attached to the blowpipe during cooling. The wooden mold in which the bubble is blown then serves as the base for the lamp.
A specially manufactured light source with a lifespan of 50,000 hours has been ingeniously installed inside the blowpipe, while the technical installation is concealed within the wooden mold.
