Beautiful Hanaemi Kokeshi by Usaburo. Hanaemi (花笑み) is a beautiful Japanese word that literally means "blooming smile" or "smiling like a flower." This is also reflected in the design, where the white petals on the red kimono even take the shape of small hearts. On the side of the red wood, you can see a small black stamp (a so-called hanko or signature stamp). This is the stamp of the woodturner or the artist in the Japanese workshop who made and approved this specific creative (sosaku) kokeshi; in this case, that is Usaburo. Usaburō Okamoto (1917–2009) was the founder of the world-famous Usaburō Kokeshi workshop and one of the most important founders of the modern, creative kokeshi movement (sōsaku kokeshi) in Japan. Usaburō Okamoto was born in Shinto Village in Gunma Prefecture (Japan). Before he started making kokeshi, he was involved in crafting art supports and metal crafts. In 1950, he began making wooden kokeshi dolls in his native village. In doing so, he chose a different path from the traditional kokeshi makers of Northern Japan (Tohoku), who were bound by strict regional styles. Usaburō, on the other hand, wanted freedom in form, color, and design. Usaburō grew into a master of his craft and won many prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award. His masterpiece Kantsubaki (Winter Camellia) was even purchased by the Japanese Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito). The height is 16 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
