A Danish shelving unit from the 1970s, manufactured by Domino Møbler. This tall, slender piece veneered in ash combines Scandinavian simplicity with thoughtful functionality — a bookcase that organises space without dominating it visually.
The construction relies on solid side panels that extend into a low plinth base, giving the unit stability without requiring wall mounting. Shelves adjust to various heights - with the exception of the central structural shelf - allowing the layout to accommodate everything from paperbacks to oversized volumes. Dark back panels create a backdrop that adds visual depth and highlights the pale ash veneer. The finish remains consistent across all visible surfaces — sides, shelves, and base share the same warm grain.
Domino Møbler was among the Danish manufacturers that embodied the 1970s ideal of democratic design — furniture combining craft-level attention to detail with accessibility for everyday homes. Denmark in this period stood at the centre of modern furniture production, its factories exporting to every continent. Storage systems and bookcases answered the needs of changing lifestyles, as heavy traditional cabinets gave way to lighter, more adaptable forms. Ash, prized for its light colour and distinctive grain pattern, remained a favourite material among Scandinavian designers throughout the decade.
Standing nearly one hundred eighty-five centimetres tall with an eighty-centimetre width, the unit offers capacity for a substantial home library or record collection. The shallow depth of under thirty centimetres allows placement in narrow hallways or compact studies where a deeper piece would obstruct movement. Adjustable shelves let you configure spacing to suit different book formats, from pocket editions to large art volumes.
The shelving unit is in good condition, with signs of use typical of furniture from this era. Minor scratches and small chips are visible along the edges. Small losses have been filled during restoration. The piece retains its original manufacturer's label. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
