Description
Arnold Bode was a German painter, draftsman, interior designer, designer, exhibition curator, and university professor.
The artist, considered degenerate during the Nazi era, was a co-initiator of the first "documenta" in Kassel in 1955, which he directed until 1968. He thus created the world's most important exhibition of contemporary art—a laboratory for art, design, and urban planning that remains unique to this day.
In addition, he worked as an artist, university professor, and furniture designer. Bode was particularly active as an interior designer and furniture creator in the 1950s. As early as 1948, he began creating seating furniture for the "Federholz Gesellschaft" (Featherwood Company). Inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, Bode designed this gliding chair offered here in the early 1950s. Only a few examples of this model were produced, making it correspondingly rare.
Arnold Bode died in 1977 in his hometown of Kassel. Bode has gone down in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany as one of the most important visionaries and activists for art.
