Product description
This antique red-lacquered low cabinet in pine is a Chinese kang cabinet with three drawers, two side doors and an open central recess. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where pine was covered in red oil lacquer, the commonest finish in domestic furniture. Only 25 cm deep: this is a piece meant for the edge of the kang or for a narrow wall, where nothing deeper would fit. The drawers held small everyday items; the central recess, open and shelved, kept in sight whatever was used daily. The case is solid pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery. Three drawers align beneath the top and two panel doors close the side modules. The apron of the central recess is cut into brackets and the pulls are iron rings on rosettes. The red lacquer has worn until the pine shows through on the top and on the most handled fronts. Where it survives, the red has shifted to an earthy orange tone. The interiors keep a darker, more even colour. Its minimal depth suits a corridor, a narrow entrance hall or the foot of a bed. It also works as a low living-room console. The worn red brings warmth to interiors of neutral palette.
