Product description
This antique organ bench with drawer in oak wood stands on two shaped plank ends tied by a through stretcher, with a long drawer beneath the seat. Originates from Central Europe, from the early twentieth century, where oak was joined with pegged mortise-and-tenon work. The bench with a drawer was a piece for the entrance passage and the kitchen: one sat on it to change shoes and stored underneath whatever fitted nowhere else. The lock shows the drawer was meant to be closed, which was usual when the piece stood in a thoroughfare. The ends are full boards with the foot cut in an ogee and a small carved rosette at mid height. The lower stretcher passes through both ends and is locked by pegs. The drawer runs on wooden bearers and keeps its iron escutcheon. The oak has darkened to a reddish honey tone, with medullary rays visible across the seat. The sheen is uneven, higher where hands and legs have rested. The joints are tight and the structure has no play. It works in an entrance hall as a seat for changing shoes, at the foot of a bed, or beneath a window. Its seat height and shallow depth make it equally valid as a narrow console in a corridor.
