Product description
This antique low cabinet with painted flowers in pine is a Chinese kang cabinet with three drawers, two floral doors and an open central recess. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where pine was lacquered in mustard ochre and outlined in black.
Its measure corresponds to the cabinet placed on the kang itself, against the wall, to keep sewing, writing implements or small goods within reach.
The case is solid pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery. Three drawers align beneath the central recess, which retains its shelf. Two panel doors close the side modules and the pulls are iron rings on rosettes. The profiles and mouldings are lacquered black.
The doors carry sprays of white and pink lilies with green leaves; the drawer fronts, continuous garlands of peonies (mudan 牡丹) in pink and white. The peony is the queen flower and an emblem of prosperity. The brushwork is fine, with outlined petals and pale fill, over the mustard ochre ground.
The ochre lacquer has gained a warm glaze and the black of the profiles has turned matt. The flowers keep their drawing but have lost saturation. The top shows old water marks and even wear.
Its minimal depth suits a narrow corridor, the foot of a bed or a living room where a conventional console will not fit. It is an accent piece, small in volume.
