Product description
This antique low cabinet in elm wood is a Chinese cabinet in red lacquer with painted decoration. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, when elm was lacquered and painted for domestic furniture. These long, low cabinets were used at floor level, beside the kang or against the wall, to store and display household objects. The low height answers to a domestic life over mats and platforms. The body is solid elm, with mortise-and-tenon joinery, two side doors and a central open niche. The doors keep their iron ring pulls; drawers run below the niche. The decoration is painted over the red lacquer: a spray of peonies on each door, in pale tones. The peony, the “queen of flowers”, stands for wealth and honour. The red ground frames the sprays and unifies the front. The red lacquer shows uneven wear, with wood exposed at the edges and a warm patina. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. For its low, long proportion, it serves as a living-room cabinet, a television base or a storage console. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and rustic interiors, where it brings warmth and material presence.
