An old brûlot cup accompanied by its saucer, made of thick white porcelain and enhanced with elegant gold decoration. The set dates from the 19th century, with an estimated dating to its first half, subject to expert appraisal. Very different from delicate parlor cups, this piece surprises with the thickness and density of its porcelain. This robust construction characterizes the old so-called "brûlot" cups, intended for very hot coffee and associated with brandy consumption. The cup rests on a small annular foot rim. Its slightly flared body ends with a thick, molded rim, while the short, massive handle asserts its silhouette. When the cup is turned upside down, the foot forms a small cavity. This could hold a measure of brandy after coffee, according to a practice formerly associated with brûlots. The decoration relies on great simplicity. A wide gold band illuminates the inside of the rim, accompanied by a fine gold line below the rim. The foot and handle echo these precious accents. The saucer complements the cup with a wide golden circle. Light glides over the white porcelain and catches the remaining gilded parts, giving the set a beautiful graphic strength. The form with a foot rim, the thick porcelain, and the gold decoration evoke French productions of the 19th century. The absence of a mark does not allow for identifying a precise manufacturer. The gilding shows wear and fading related to age and use, particularly visible on the saucer and the handle. These traces accurately tell the long life of this piece. A table object and a witness to old customs surrounding coffee and brandies, this set preserves the atmosphere of 19th-century cafes and taverns.
