This super cute egg cup comes from France. This playful piece of tableware is a classic hallmark of French design from the 19th and early 20th centuries. In France, these individual, figurative egg cups are known as coquetiers. French silversmiths and metalworkers (such as Pierre Bezon and Daniel Crégut) popularized the specific "egg on legs" motif during the Belle Époque and Art Deco periods. While many French versions feature duck feet or chicken claws as legs, this particular egg cup stands out due to its cloven hooves. This reflects the deep appreciation of the French decorative arts for classical mythology and rustic themes. It is simply a nice, antique item to place on the table, for example as a cocktail pick holder. It does have a lot of patina, but that is to be expected given its age.
