This antique folk painted chest in pine is a flat-lidded chest with blue-green paint and sponge decoration of dark spots. It originates from Central Europe, from the mid-nineteenth century, within the folk art of painted furniture.
Trunks and chests kept clothing, trousseau and household goods in the home, and also accompanied moves. Their hinged lid and robust body answered to everyday, lasting use.
The body is solid pine, with a flat lid and iron hardware. The surface is painted blue-green with a sponge decoration of dark spots, a common technique of folk furniture.
The sponge paint freely imitates the grain and mottling of fine woods, and wear reveals the pine in the areas of use. The surface reads authentic, with no repainting.
For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or an accent piece. It fits rustic, country and eclectic interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
