Product description
This antique folk chest in pine is a flat-lidded chest with incised geometric carving and traces of green paint. It originates from Central Europe, from the mid-nineteenth century, within the folk art of carved and painted furniture.
Trunks and chests kept clothing, trousseau and household goods in the home, and also accompanied moves. Their hinged lid and robust body answered to everyday, lasting use.
The body is solid pine, with the front covered in incised carving of geometric motifs —diamonds, grids and stylised trees— and keeps traces of its green paint. The joinery is traditional.
The geometric carving belongs to the protective and decorative repertoire of folk art, and the aged green paint reveals the pine in the areas of use. The surface reads authentic, with no repainting.
For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or an accent piece. It fits rustic, country and eclectic interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
