Product description
This antique Chinese painted trunk in pine wood is a flat-lidded chest with polychrome decoration of peonies and birds. It originates from China, from the late Qing dynasty, within the tradition of the Tibetan-style painted trunk. The painted trunk kept textiles, household goods and valuables in the home, and its decorated face made it a piece of prestige. The paint on a dark ground followed floral and auspicious repertoires. The body is solid pine, with a flat lid, iron hardware and traditional joinery. The structure keeps its original paint, with wear consistent with its age. The front is painted with peonies and birds on a dark ground, framed by floral borders and fretwork. The peony (mudan) symbolises wealth and honour in the Chinese tradition. For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or a storage piece with decorative value. It fits wabi-sabi, eclectic and Asian-feeling interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
